A mother who is carrying a baby with incurable medical condition should have sufficient grounds to end her pregnancy. This mother, however, chose not to proceed in ending her pregnancy; rather she chose to go through with the full term. Read on to find out more on Keri Young and her pregnancy.
When Keri and her husband Royce Young found out that they were going to have a second child, the two were elated.
However, in February, doctors revealed that the baby Keri was carrying whom they named Eva Grace Young, had anencephaly, a rare condition where part of the baby’s brain and skull do not form in the womb, and, unfortunately, the condition is proven to end the baby’s life after birth. It affects only one in every 100,000 babies born.
“She has perfect feet and perfect hands. She has perfect kidneys, perfect lungs and a perfect liver. Sadly, she doesn’t have a perfect brain,” the Oklahoma mom wrote in a heartbreaking Instagram post. “We found out recently she has anencephaly and is incurable.”
The couple had the options either to discontinue the pregnancy or carry the baby to full term. Despite the grief and heartache that she felt, the mother chose not to stop her gestation. Instead, she thought of others. Keri made a tough decision to go with the second option so the baby’s organs could be donated to other children in need. Parents like her know that in order for their children to live, someone else’s has to sacrifice. Eva’s life could be the miracle they have been praying for.
“This was not an easy decision,” she wrote. “For the next 20 weeks I will feel her kick, [I’ll] have the hiccups, and we’ll be able to hear her perfect heart beating all while knowing we’ll only get a few short hours with her when she’s born.”
Keri goes through all the pregnancy pains. But in the end, there is no soft, beautiful newborn to remind you that it was all worth it.’
Royce wrote on a Facebook post that his wife was a “superhero” for making the tough decision. The post received over 72,000 likes. He added how Keri’s attitude and determination lifted his spirits, saying it was like “watching a superhero find her superpowers.”
“In literally the worst moment of her life, finding out her baby was going to die, it took her less than a minute to think of someone else and how her selflessness could help,”
“It’s one of the most powerful things I’ve ever experienced.”
In the post, Royce recounts the memory of being in the doctor’s room, holding his wife, feeling her heaving chest pressed against his, tears rolling down him and his wife’s face.
Royce and Keri also have a 2-year-old son named Harrison. On the day of Eva’s birth, the family came together to say goodbye to her. “We said hello and goodbye to our sweet Eva,” Keri posted on Facebook. “She was so perfect in her own little way.”
The couple knew that there were other parents out there praying for a miracle and their daughter could be that miracle.
